All rights reserved.

This article introduces IVI as a way of understanding how we can move from individual awareness to collective transformation. More than an assessment tool , the IVI Model’s contribution should be seen as an efficient way to understand how values, inner development and our relationship with the world can become mutually reinforcing.

Imagine a garden that is not a carefully arranged and homogeneous set of plants.

A garden where different forms of life can coexist, enrich one another, and collectively nurture the same soil.

Now, just like the garden, think about a society built in a way that individuals can feel connected without having to deny what distinguishes them.

In a time where tensions are growing, divisions deepen and opposition can increase dramatically, our more urgent task is not to find agreement on everything, but to learn how to welcome diversity of values and opinions without estranging us from one another.

Do we need to be alike to belong together?

Can’t we live together without agreeing on everything?

Shifting our perspective is more than a matter of tolerance. It invites us to reconsider how we understand ourselves, other people and the very nature of society.

1. From understanding others to understanding ourselves

Living together begins with accepting otherness, i.e. making the effort to understand the world from which another person speaks, the experiences that have shaped their beliefs, and the values that inform their choices.

More than listening to others, living together requires a willingness to examine ourselves.

Why do certain opinions threaten us? Why do we sometimes confuse our convictions with unquestionable truths? What are we really defending when we reject another person’s perspective?

This is where the distinction between our core values and our aspirational values becomes particularly meaningful: our core values provide a foundation for our identity, helping us understand what matters most deeply to us, while our aspirational values point towards the ways in which we wish to grow, relate to others and contribute to the wider world.

The challenge is not to abandon our core values in the name of harmony but to understand how they can be expressed without becoming barriers to dialogue, and how our aspirations can help us move beyond the limitations of our current perspectives.

The Inner Values Incubator (IVI) offers a framework for this process of self-discovery and development. By making our values more explicit and connecting them with inner development, it helps us explore not only who we are, but also who we might become in relation to others.

Self-awareness and inner development are not an end. They are the beginning of a more conscious relationship with the world.

2. From individual values to collective intelligence

Building a society does not mean accepting everything. Some actions in particular undermine human dignity, destroy trust or threaten the conditions that make collective life possible.

The challenge is to create a shared space strong enough to accommodate disagreement without turning those who disagree with us into enemies.

This requires us to move beyond a simplistic, black-and-white understanding of the world and develop our capacity to live with uncertainty, ambiguity and complexity.

The living world offers us a powerful source of inspiration. It is made up of relationships, interdependencies and dynamic balances. Its richness emerges not from uniformity, but from the interactions of different forms of life.

While we are different, we should realise that we are not separate.

Our actions affect others, often in unpredictable ways, while the actions of others transform our own circumstances, possibilities and opportunities.

This insight lies at the heart of the collective dimension of IVI.

If individual IVI helps us understand our values and our potential for development, collective IVI invites us to explore how different values, perspectives and capacities can contribute to a shared purpose.

A collective is not simply a collection of individuals. Nor does it become truly intelligent merely because its members possess considerable individual intelligence.

Collective intelligence emerges when individuals can recognise their interdependence, understand their differences, identify complementary strengths and work together towards something that none of them could achieve alone.

This raises important questions for any community, organisation or society such as:

Which values do we genuinely share, and which remain different?

How can our differences become complementary rather than antagonistic?

What tensions need to be acknowledged rather than suppressed?

How can we turn our shared aspirations into meaningful collective action?

IVI can help make these questions explicit. Its purpose is not to impose a single set of values, but to create a language through which individuals and collectives can better understand their own orientations, their relationships with others and the contributions they might make.

Thus, the objective is not uniformity, but coherence: a dynamic capacity to act together while preserving the diversity that makes collective life creative and resilient.

3. From agreement to meaningful cooperation

Building a society demand maturity. Maturity requires to be able to make important distinctions:

disagreement enriches while confrontation destroys;

conviction is not certainty;

freedom is not indifference.

Discernment is essential here because not every difference is productive, not every innovation represents progress, and not every collective agreement serves the common good.

The question is not simply whether we can cooperate, but what we are cooperating for, and what our cooperation makes possible.

Here, IVI’s broader architecture offers an important perspective. It connects the exploration of values and inner development with the challenges confronting society, including education, democracy and regeneration.

It encourages us to move from introspection to participation, and from the awareness of our own values to the question of how those values can contribute to a world in which human beings and the living world can flourish.

In this sense, individual and collective development cannot be separated. Individuals shape the communities to which they belong, while communities create — or constrain — the conditions in which individuals can develop. A reciprocal and transformative relationship.

Photo © 1998 Gerasimos Kouvaras. Rethinking leadership in an interconnected world

The leadership of tomorrow cannot rely on centralised authority, command and control. It must increasingly create the conditions in which different forms of intelligence can meet, challenge one another constructively and generate possibilities that none could have produced alone.

This does not mean that leadership becomes unnecessary, or that every opinion must carry the same weight in every decision.

It means that leadership must learn to cultivate the conditions for collective intelligence: a shared sense of purpose, mutual trust, the ability to confront disagreement, and the discernment to make decisions in situations of uncertainty.

Such leadership requires an understanding of both individual and collective dynamics.

At the individual level, leaders need to become more aware of the values, assumptions and aspirations that guide their decisions.

At the collective level, they need to understand the values that shape their organisations, the tensions between those values, and the conditions under which people can contribute their different capacities to a common endeavour.

IVI can support this movement by connecting personal awareness with collective purpose. It helps shift the question from “How do I get people to follow me?” to “How can we create the conditions in which people can develop and contribute together?”

Far from rejecting individual responsibility, it makes more demanding: each person must consider not only the consequences of their actions for themselves, but also their effects on the wider system of relationships in which they participate.

5. Returning to humanism: dignity, discernment and freely chosen effort

These reflections bring us back to fundamental humanistic dimensions:

Dignity which calls us to recognise the intrinsic worth of individuals while acknowledging their capacity for development.

Discernment which invites us to examine our values, understand our relationships and make more conscious choices.

Freely chosen effort that connects inner development with action: it asks us to turn what we believe into what we actually do, both individually and collectively.

These resonate deeply with the individual and collective dimensions of IVI.

6. From acedia to olbos: recovering the capacity to flourish together

Perhaps the deepest question is whether we can move beyond a society characterised by fragmentation, disengagement and the loss of meaning towards one in which individuals and communities recover their capacity to care, participate and flourish.

The ancient Greek concept of acedia can help us name a state of inner disengagement: a loss of care, direction or meaningful involvement. By contrast, olbos evokes flourishing, prosperity and a fuller experience of life.

The movement from acedia to olbos is not simply a passage from pessimism to optimism, or from individual unhappiness to collective happiness.

It involves restoring meaningful relationships between our inner lives, our actions, other people and the wider living world.

This is one of the deeper ambitions of IVI: to help individuals reconnect with what matters to them, develop their capacity to act in accordance with their values, and discover how their development can serve something beyond themselves.

At the collective level, the same movement means creating the conditions in which shared values can become sources of engagement, cooperation and regeneration — without requiring everyone to become the same.

Flourishing, in this perspective, is neither exclusively individual nor exclusively collective. It emerges through the quality of the relationships between the two.

7. Building a common world without erasing our differences

Ultimately, building a society does not mean pursuing permanent consensus. It means creating a common world in which our differences can become sources of creativity rather than causes of separation.

This requires education, but education understood in its fullest sense: not merely the transmission of knowledge, but the development of the capacity to understand ourselves, exercise discernment, engage with others and take responsibility for the world we share.

It also requires a different understanding of progress. The question is not only what new technologies, institutions or forms of intelligence can enable us to achieve, but what kind of human beings and societies we are becoming through their use.

Individual development and collective transformation must therefore advance together. Neither can succeed sustainably without the other.

A society is a living, evolving achievement — one that each generation must learn, renew and transmit. To build a common world is, ultimately, an ongoing work of collective education.

The purpose of IVI is to contribute to this process by helping individuals and collectives make their values more conscious, connect them with development, and translate them into meaningful action.

Learning not simply to live alongside one another, but to become more fully human through our relationships with one another.

Photo © 2007 Gerasimos Kouvaras.
